History of the Department

Training of specialists in geodesy, cartography, geographic information systems and land management began in 2002, when the Department of Space Geographic Information Systems (Head – Prof. Zheleznyak O.O.) and Department of Land Management and Cadastre (Head – Ph.D. Lishchytovych L.I.) were established at the National Aviation University.

In 2002, the Department of Space Geographic Information Systems began to hold the annual International Conference “Astronomical School of Young Scientists”, as well as to publish an academic journal “Astronomical School’s Report”. In 2003, a photogrammetry laboratory was established at the department on the basis of Delta photogrammetric stations for processing aerospace images.

In 2005, the Department of Space Geographic Information Systems and the Department of Land Management Technologies were merged into the Department of Geodesy and Land Management Technologies, headed by Ph.D. Gulevets V.D.

In connection with the development of aerospace research in NAU, the department in 2007 was divided into the Department of Aerospace Geodesy (Head – Prof. Zheleznyak O.O.) and the Department of Land Management Technologies (Head – Ph.D. Gulevets V.D.).

During this period, cooperation was established with KMS Company – a representative of Trimble Navigation (USA) – a leader in the production of GPS receivers, optical and laser positioning systems, with TVIS – the first supplier of satellite images in Ukraine, with the Main Astronomical Observatory of NAS of Ukraine. Magellan Aerospace Agency, with the Research Institute of Geodesy and Cartography, with the Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

In 2008, the Department of Aerospace Geodesy established a specialized scientific council with the right to accept for consideration and defense of dissertations for the degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in specialties 01.02.01 Theoretical Mechanics, 01.03.01 Astrometry, celestial mechanics, and established a postgraduate school in these specialties. The head of the specialized council was appointed Prof. Zheleznyak O.O. In 2012, the specialty 05.07.12 Remote Aerospace Research was introduced in the specialized council.

In 2012, the Laboratory of Geographic Information Systems equipped with modern computer equipment and software was established at the Department of Aerospace Geodesy. In 2012, the Department of Land Management Technologies was headed by D.Sc. Kovalchuk M.S. Under his leadership, the Laboratory of Geology and Morphology was organized at the department.

In 2013, the Department of Land Management Technologies was renamed the Department of Land Management and Cadastre. In 2016–2017, it was headed by D.Sc. Gordeev A.Yu., and since 2017 – by D.Sc. Novakovska I.O. Since 2014, the Department of Land Management and Cadastre held the annual All-Ukrainian (from 2022 – International) Conference of students, postgraduate students and young scientists “Modern Technologies of Land management, Land administration and Cadastre”, as well as the All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference “Innovative Geospatial Technologies of Trimble Corporation for Land Management and Cadastre” (2015) and the All-Ukrainian scientific-practical seminar “GIS-AeroUA-2016” (2016).

In 2020, the Department of Aerospace Geodesy and the Department of Land Management and Cadastre were merged into the Department of Aerospace Geodesy and Land Management. Since July 2021 it was headed by Honorary Surveyor of Ukraine, D.Sc., Prof. Zheleznyak Oleg Olexandrovich, and since December 2021 – by Ph.D. Velikodsky Yu.I.

The educational process at the Department of Aerospace Geodesy and Land Management is provided by a highly qualified scientific and pedagogical team consisting of doctors of sciences (D.Sc.), professors, candidates of sciences (Ph.D.), associate professors, leading scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, leading specialists of land management organizations, research and project institutes of geodesy, land management, cartographic, geoinformation profile.
