History of the Department

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technology is one of the leading departments of the University in the field of basic sciences.

The history of the department dates back to 1933, when a chemical laboratory was established at the university. The presence of the laboratory, and some aspects of its work can be found in the minutes of the meeting of teachers from 7.10.1938, which is stored in the archives of the university.

Later, on the basis of this laboratory, the Department of Chemistry and Physics was established, the head of which from 1947 to 1954 was Professor M.M. Gratiansky, and from 1954 Professor M.P. Arbuzov.

1961. The independent department of chemistry is headed by Ph.D., associate professor Lerner M.E. During this period, the staff of the department has 6 teachers. On the initiative of Professor Aksyonov O.F. in 1964, a scientific group was established at the Department of Technical Operation of Aircraft and Engines to solve scientific and technical problems of application and testing of fuels and lubricants. This event gave the development of the second direction of the department: the study of the properties of fuels and lubricants.

1968. To ensure quality training of specialists in the field of chemical technology of fuel and lubricants, the department was reorganized. It began to be called the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Fuels and Lubricants, for the management of which from the Kiev Polytechnic Institute was invited Dr., Professor Chumakov Y.I. The department had 21 scientific and pedagogical workers.

1971. In order to provide an educational process for the training of mechanical engineers in the field of fuels and lubricants at the Faculty established in 1969, the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of Fuels and Lubricants was divided into 2 departments: Department of Chemistry and Department of Testing and Application of Fuels and Lubricants. The Department of Chemistry was headed by Ph.D., Associate Professor Primanko V.I. The educational process at this time was provided by 10 teachers. The department of testing and application of fuels and lubricants was headed by Ph.D., Associate Professor Litvinov O.O. To teach the disciplines were invited scientists who were engaged in research under the guidance of Professor Aksenov O.F. The educational process was provided by 7 teachers.

1984. Due to the change in the structure of the curriculum for the training of fuel engineers, testing and application of fuels and lubricants and the Department of Chemistry were merged into a single department, which was named the Department of Chemistry and Fuels and Lubricants. The department was headed by Professor Litvinov O.O. The implementation of the curriculum was performed by 15 teachers.

In parallel with the educational process, the department performs a large amount of research. During 1972-1999, the department has a branch research laboratory GNDL-12, supervisors of which were Professor Litvinov O.O. (1972-1977) and associate professor Belyansky V.P. (1977-1997), Ph.D. Shepel A.Ya. (1997-1999). Leading scientific consultant since its inception was a corresponding member of AN USRS Aksyonov O.F.

In 1994, the department began work on the establishment of a certification center for petroleum products, and in 1997, a joint decision of the Department of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education established the Ukrainian Center for Aviation Chemotology and Certification of Petroleum Products “UTsACH-SEPRO”, headed by Ph.D., Associate Professor Lastovets A.M., as well as the a Lboratory of the Test Center of Aviation Chemotology, which was headed by Ph.D., Associate Professor Boychenko S.V.

2000. The department is headed by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Serhiy Vitaliyovych Ivanov. The educational process at the department was provided by a qualified team of teachers, consisting of 7 professors and 16 associate professors. The department trains specialists of educational and qualified levels “bachelor”, “specialist” and “master” in the field of “chemical technology and engineering”, specialties “chemical technology of fuels and carbon materials” and “chemical technology of macromolecular compounds”.

2007. The Department of Chemistry received an independent premises on the territory of NAU. Work has been carried out to prepare the building for the new teaching year. The building houses modern laboratories, graduate students’ rooms , teaching rooms , laboratories of the Ukrainian Center for Aviation Chemotology and Certification of Petroleum Products “UCAH-SEPRO”, a multimedia auditorium and a cozy dining room.

2019. The department is headed by Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Vitaliy Lukych Chumak. The department is a graduate and trains specialists in the following educational and professional programs:
